4X Quad Charge Station for Wii Remote Review from CNET

Of the three current-generation Game Console, only the Nintendo Wii lacks a first-party charging solutions for their control. If you do not want to go through an endless stream of AA batteries, which means you should turn to one of the increasing number of third-party charging accessories becomes available. We are still very happy with the Nyko Charging Base that simultaneously power up to two Wii remotes and put a nice rubber grip on the back of the controllers, too. But 4X Quad Charge Station from Penguin United ups the ante: now you can simultaneously charge up to four remotes at once. The extra capacity plus some smart design decisions makes Penguin a candidate for the best Wii controller charger to date.

The Quad Charge Station is a round base that will not go slipping away thanks to rubber feet. The four Wii Remote Control docking slots are arranged in a cross-shaped pattern on the unit's topside, which is sloping upwards. The bright blue LEDs in each docking slot is not tackiest thing we have ever come across, but in a dark room they can be distracting. Unfortunately it is not possible to turn these lights off when charging base is plugged in, but the power adapter cable is detachable from the base itself.

The Quad Charge Station ships with four rechargeable batteries, click on the battery compartment any standard Wii remote. These battery / cover combinations is actually lighter than the standard AA batteries and the Battery Cover the replacement, and the result is a Wii controller with a slightly different emphasis. We detected no change in the gameplay, but hardcore Wii fans may need some time to adjust to the new feel.

We have also understood that the addition of a recessed sync button built into the back of the controller cover was a good idea, as anyone with a Wii is certainly aware that the inspectors can sometimes lose the connection. While the Nyko posted a nice rubberized grip on the rear of their battery covers, covers Penguin has a rigged plastic. Although not as smooth as the Original Nintendo covers, rubber covers Nyko perform much better. Feel free to use rubber sleeves with Nintendo Penguin cover, but be warned that you must remove them in charge. Bracelets, however, can be easily withdrawn to the side so that the charging contacts can touch.

Penguin USA claims that charge four remotes at the same time can take up to 4 hours on the Quad Charge Station. This estimate was for money, and in our tests we were able to charge a single remote control for about 2 hours. With regard to playing time, "says Penguin each Lithium Ion battery gives 13 hours use. The remote fits very well into the charger – actually makes the basis for a great way to store your remotes when not in use.

The actual contacts on the base feels a bit flimsy – they are simply a loop of thin wire. We have Never had any problems in our tests, but we question their durability in the long term. We really liked the charge indicators in front of each dock. Four green LED represents 25 percent increments of the battery charge. This also comes in very handy when you just want to quickly see how much juice left in a remote.

Overall we liked Penguin 4X Quad Charge Station for its ability to power up to four Wii remotes simultaneously charge their visual progress indicator, and the convenience of having batteries built into the covers. Enterprises to 13.99 euros, it should be the only one charging solution you need to buy. That said, if the grip is one of the important details for you, and you do not plan to use more than two Wii remotes, you can stick with the Nyko Charging Base, as the grip covers are among the best we've used to date.
